The Department of Chemistry, Thomas Jones Synod College, Jowai was established in the year 2021, along with other science departments. As a part of the newly established science stream, the Department of Chemistry holds a pivotal role in shaping the scientific minds of the students with a focus on providing comprehensive knowledge, practical skills, and critical thinking abilities. At present, the Department of Chemistry consist of two faculty member (Assistant Professor) and one Lab Assistant. The department is affiliated with the North-Eastern Hill University in 2023.

VISION
*To provide quality chemistry education and inspire students to develop a strong foundation in the subject.
*To foster a culture of continuous improvement and adaptability, keeping abreast of the latest advancements in chemistry education and research.
*To engage with the local community through outreach programs, bringing chemistry education and its benefits to a broader audience.

MISSION
*To be a leading chemistry department that nurtures a passion for scientific inquiry, encourages research exploration, and prepares students to make valuable contributions to society and scientific advancements.

The Chemistry Department of the college features a dedicated laboratory facility that facilitates a hands-on learning experience for the students. This environment allows them to actively participate in practical experiments pertaining to the realm of chemistry, enabling a direct exploration of chemical compounds and reactions. Our Laboratory is equipped with specialized tools, instruments, and safety measures to ensure accurate and safe experimentation.

Equipment and Apparatus: Our Chemistry laboratory is equipped with a wide range of equipment and apparatus such as glassware (beakers, flasks, test tubes), heating devices (Bunsen burners, hot plates, water bath, oven), and measuring instruments (balances, pipettes, burettes). Other instruments include digital conductivity, digital Ph meter, digital potentiometer, visible spectrophotometer, rotatory shaker and melting point apparatus.

Safety Measures: Safety is our top priority in our laboratory. Safety equipment including safety goggles, lab coats, gloves, to protect students from potential hazards. Moreover, students have to follow the standard safety rules while doing experiments. These rules include using chemicals correctly, the utilization of fume hoods when working with volatile substances and knowing what to do in case of emergencies.

Chemical Storage: Chemicals are stored in designated areas with appropriate labeling and under proper storage conditions. The segregation of incompatible chemicals was done to prevent accidents.

Experimentation: We are conducting experiments as per the prescribed syllabus related to chemical reactions, synthesis and analysis. These experiments involve mixing various chemicals, measuring reactions, determining chemical properties, and analysing results.

Data Collection and Lab Record: Students record observations, measurements, and outcomes of experiments. They then need to write a lab report to document their findings and results. These reports need to be written in specific formats.
